Is a Touchpad Computer the Way Forward?
Computers with touch pads, such as notebooks, were often seen as technology that was created in search of a better solution to the problem of using a portable computer. Therefore, it is fair to say, that until recently, the touchpad computer was not the 1st option on everybody's consumer electronics wish list.
The modern take on the touchpad computer
So why is it then, that touchpad computers are becoming increasingly popular? The simple answer lies in the fact that the software has finally caught up with the hardware. Prior to the most current generation of operating systems, touchpad devices were seen as inferior devices to the computer mouse. Therefore, the software to match didn't really take into consideration the fact that many consumers found the conventional touchpad are very cumbersome and inaccurate device to use.
Fortunately for consumers, touchpad hardware has been revamped quite significantly over the past few years, and so has operating system hardware. The realisation by manufacturers that far more can be done with a touchpad, than a mouse, has led to such advancements, and far more interest in touch pad devices as a result. The current situation comprises of a standard desktop, with a primary touchpad device, for navigational purposes, to suit.
The mouse is on its last legs
The conventional computer mouse has finally seen some serious competition from trackpad technology. Part of this, is due to the reasons mentioned above (the gestures and new operating system software are taking far more advantage of trackpad hardware).
The resulting situation, is one in which touchpad computer hardware is seen as a more usable, and functional solution to the desktop PC paradigm.
A noticeable side-effect of such an increase in trackpad hardware being used in computer systems, is that it is seen as far more fashionable to use a touchpad computer, than a mouse and keyboard combination. This is also sped up the surge in demand for computer touch pads. As a result, the computer mouse seems to be fading away.
The mouse touchpad
As a final revolt to the trackpad hardware that is currently being seen on the market, the touchpad mouse comes as a relatively new piece of hardware, that aims to bring all the enjoyment and usability of gestures to consumers, and the functionality of a conventional mouse. Some may also find that a touchpad mouse is far more accurate than a trackpad device.
Even though the touchpad mouse has seen quite a bit of interest, and a lot of use in modern desktop hardware, the touchpad does seem to still have the edge in terms of functionality. This is due to the fact that many more fingers can be placed on multi–touch touchpad hardware devices than computer mice with touch pads on their surface.
The potential future
It is unclear whether the touchpad will completely take over from the mouse. However, there is one clear direction in consumer computing, and that is; many hardware and software devices are being used for gesture-based control and more immersive experience when it comes to using a computer. Therefore, potentially, the device that offers the greatest usability and functionality of the software provided on desktop computers, and notebooks alike, is the one that will be most used.
